South African Meat Industry Manual

Here are a few ways a circular economy can be integrated:

  • Waste Reduction: Implementing practices to reduce waste at every stage of production, from feed to finished product, can minimize environmental impact and improve efficiency. (CSIR, 2022)
  • Resource Recovery: Products and waste materials, such as converting animal waste into bioenergy or organic fertilizers, can create additional revenue streams and reduce waste.
  • Sustainable Practices: Adopting sustainable farming practices, such as rotational grazing and regenerative agriculture, can enhance soil health, increase biodiversity, and improve the overall sustainability of the industry. (SwitchAfrica, n.d.)
  • Local Sourcing: Encouraging local sourcing of feed and other inputs can reduce transportation emissions and support local economies, creating a more resilient supply chain.
  • Empowering and Upskilling of farm labourers: Empowering and upskilling farm labourers is crucial for fostering a circular economy and results in enhanced productivity and efficiency, aside from the social, and economic impact.
  • Consumer Education: Educating consumers about the benefits of sustainable meat production and the importance of supporting local, environmentally friendly products can drive demand for more sustainable options.

By embracing these principles, the South African meat industry can contribute to a more sustainable and circular economy, benefiting both the environment and the economy.
